For quite some time, I was completely engrossed with Breaking Bad. It was the first TV show which I really got into and would binge watch until the early morning. It had me completely hooked. I was commissioned to create an illustration for a personal cinema room, just in time for the 5th season. I had recently got a Wacom Intuos graphics tablet and was developing my style with the first of the Breaking Bad illustrations. Below is my ‘experimental’ illustration and the main commission.
The Experiment
This first illustration was from season 3… for me, its where Breaking Bad really starting getting exciting. For this illustration, I was interested in trying to create a more realistic drawing by using a combination of Adobe Illustrator [for creating the lines and colour], then Photoshop for the gradients, added shadows and highlights. I really enjoyed using the Live Paint feature in Illustrator so I could draw all the strokes, then deleting all overlapping and intersecting objects. While time consuming, I really like the effect it produced. This process would soon come back to haunt me on the second illustration!...
The Commission
At the time this was my magnum opus, or more accurately, my nemesis…
A good friend was building a cinema room and wanted an art piece for one of the walls. Due to the nature of the commission, I was given extra time to get this exactly how I and the client wanted.
Through hours of drawing roof beams, or drawing windows, I was completely captivated and was excited to see the final product. Once I had completed the line work in Adobe Illustrator [deleting thousands of tiny objects], I added the colour and textures in Photoshop.
