Second Extinction was a cooperative first-person shooter developed and published by Systemic Reaction., a part of Avalance Studios Group. I was contacted through Instagram, by the Creative Lead of Avalanche Studios, with a brief to create a piece of artwork promoting their new FPS game ‘Second Extinction’.
Needless to say, I jumped at the chance to be involved.
The brief
Following a great initial call with the Creative Lead, David, the original brief was to create an ‘ensemble’ piece involving; A lot ‘raptors and a T-Rex’. After watching the promo videos, geeking out over the classic Turok connections, I spent the weekend furiously sketching out some scamps/layouts to establish an early direction... dinosaurs, lots of dinosaurs.

Development
After another productive back and forth with David, the agreed direction was a ‘John Wick’ style poster design with more ‘Raptors and a massive T-Rex... Due to the recently established importance of the central heroes of the game, the project developed into requiring 4 versions of the same design with the protagonists colour palettes being an important element. Back to the drawing board...

The result
As I played with the composition, I worked through landscape, portrait and square layouts… with all the claws, menacing Raptors and smoke, it was all feeling extremely cluttered. As the final design was intended for use only on Instagram, everything was made a little more sparse, with all the elements able to breath better within a square format.
